PRINT + WEB: ISTD BREAKING DOWN THE BRIEF

For this session we looked at breaking down a project brief. We were asked in our briefing to choose 3 old ISTD
briefs to look at.

I initially chose these briefs.

10 Things You Should Know About.. (2009)

Channel X (2010)

Mutton Quad (2011)

  • Terminology
  • What is the brief asking?
  • Does it make sense to you?
  • What makes a good brief?
For the first part of the session we were asked to highlight keywords and sentences in our brief and were given 3 minuets to do this.

We then considered how we qualify these terms. We as a group shared the words we highlighted, and explained if they were relevant.

Some of the words we covered are listed below
  • Connects
  • Metaphorical
  • Journey
  • Broadest
  • Fascinating
  • Interesting
We found a lot of the words we highlighted were not explicit in regards to what we needed to do in the brief.

Loraine said that we should look for these words in a brief 'bad words' and try and see why they are used.

Clients and brief writers don't know what they are asking for, so consider finding it!

From this task we then had to choose 1 brief to use for our project. We then were given a set of questions we had to answer in the brief.

I chose to go ahead with the Mutton Quad brief as I felt it best suited me as I enjoy the branding side of graphic design.

5 things I don't know about the brief.

5 problems the brief proposes and why i want to solve them.

5 facts on the audience.

5 facts about the subject.

5 things I want to communicate.

This task, enabled me to clarify and refine the details in the brief as it is pretty much open to interpretation.
I then started to create some brainstorms of potential concepts and things associated to the subject.

For the final part of the session we was asked to re-write the brief in regards to how we wanted to execute it. I still had more brainstorming to do before writing it out in the session.

Loraine suggested that we should consider.
  • What products can be made?
  • What is your audience?
  • How can it be produced?
  • Will it unify between both print and web?
