“[Graphic Design is] an ongoing examination/conversation between the dynamics of personal exploration and professional practice” – Matt Owens, Volume one.

In a professional context your individuality and effectiveness as a designer will be measured by the skills you have and more importantly how you apply them. You are viewed through your work, its personality, its tone of voice and creative concerns.

This Brief offers you the opportunity to identify, develop and exploit your own individual design identity within the context of contemporary Graphic Design practice. You will be encouraged to make independent choices regarding the focus of your investigation and appropriate resolution of your ideas.

BRIEF 1

AS Colour's Little Help Project was inspired by the huge amount of untapped t-shirt design talent that exists in Australia and New Zealand. Way back in 2009 we noticed that many of the most talented designers didn’t have the means or cash flow to get their designs into print, so we came up with a way to give emerging talent a kick start.

This year the Little Help Project has evolved into a new format with a focus on showcasing more designs and offering better opportunities for designers to get their shirts into print. From September 2013 we will be taking submissions for t-shirt designs and on November 1st, ten of the best designs will be displayed on the Little Help Project website. All will be available to buy with each design being printed to order.

This format will be repeated again from April 2014 so we will now have a 6 monthly cycle of new designs and prizes. Also new for this year is a regular series of limited edition collaborations with established t-shirt designers and Little Help Project finalists. We see this initiative as a way of nurturing and growing the t-shirt culture in our part of the world along with giving something back to aspiring designers.

All entries must be original designs that have not been used previously as a t-shirt print or other graphic on any item of clothing. (Original artwork that has been used in print form in other media is acceptable as long as the submitter can prove that it is indeed their original work if needed).

There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

The Little Help Project is open to all emerging t-shirt designers young and old.

Prize

Designers will receive a 12.5% royalty for each shirt sold, with royalties being paid at the end of the contest period.

The shirts will be online for five months until October when we will give one of the designers a cash prize of US $4000. The top designer will be chosen by our team along with an element of public voting on social media.

Why have I chosen this brief?

I chose this brief initially because a personal interest of mine is fashion and in the past I have created potential apparel companies for briefs which I really enjoyed and were successful. Also in my first year 'Speaking from experience' project I created a T.shirt design which I screen printed and put in as a part of my pack which also heightened my interest in graphic design for clothing. The brief and the company that host the competition come across and professional and I like the cause that they are putting forward to help emerging designers. I also like that fact that it is a free competition with the benefit of the designer making a profit also.

BREIF 2

The Type Directors Club is the leading international organization whose purpose is to support excellence in typography, both in print and on screen. Through our annual competition and exhibition and frequent salons and workshops, we hope to celebrate the current stars of the typographic field and educate its future leaders.
We now invites the submission of entries to our 60th annual Communication Design Competition and 17th annual Typeface Design Competition, the most highly-respected and selective competitions of typographic and typeface design from around the world.

This year’s communication design competition is being chaired by TDC board memberGail Anderson, and the annual and exhibition materials are being designed by the New York brand and experience design firm Collins.

Alongside our annual competitions, the TDC also awards very special members of our community, those that have devoted their lives making our world a more beautiful place through their amazing work by bestowing upon them our most prestigious award, the TDC Medal. Through the TDC Scholarship and TDC Student Awards, we hope to encourage the typographic leaders of tomorrow.

Please note, the deadline for entries is December 13, 2013, but if you submit by the early bird deadline of Friday, November 1, you will receive a substantial discount on the entry fee. Late deadline is January 14, 2014.

Eligibility

Entries must have been produced or published during 2013. Submissions can be by anyone associated with the entry.

Prize

Winning submissions are displayed in seven exhibitions that travel the globe next year, and are also published in a beautiful hardbound annual, Typography 35.

Why have I chosen this brief?

I chose this brief because TDC are a reputable design competition company, I also have an avid interest ing typography, editorial and publishing design and this brief explores all those sides of graphic design. I also like the free range of the design as I can create anything I like to submit. The only negative about this brief is the fact that it cost's $45 to enter and more after for late entries or if your work wins to be displayed.

BREIF 3

Typography Day will be organized for the seventh time on 28th Feb, 1st, 2nd March 2014 at the Symbiosis Institute of Design, Pune (India) in collaboration with the Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) with support from India Design Association (InDeAs) and Aksharaya.

The event will feature a day of workshops on Typography and Calligraphy followed by two days of conference dedicated to ’Typography and Culture’. The international conference will be devoted to addressing issues faced by type designers, type users and type educators.

Beside workshops and conference, Typography Day will also host a poster design competition. The theme for the poster competition is "Across Opposites". Design a poster to express two opposite or conflicting meaning words (antonym). Each of these words should be from a different language. You can make use of two different types faces from two different cultures.

Calligraphic or digitally created letterforms or existing fonts, or a combination of these can be used for the poster. Size of the final poster: 420mm x 600mm only in portrait format. Resolution: 300 dpi - File type: JPEG or PDF - Color Mode: CMYK.

Each participant is allowed a maximum of three entries.

There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

This competition is open to students, faculty and professionals all over the world.

Prize

Twenty five winning entries will be published and displayed in an exhibition during the event. The winners are entitled to free participation (workshop expenses and food) during the Typography Seminar and Workshop on 28th Feb, 1st, 2nd March 2014.

Why have I chosen this brief?

I have chosen this brief because the it again focuses of typography and publishing design. I would really like experiment more with creating my own typography and the contrast of both calligraphy and type is something that I think would be interesting to explore. The competition is completely free and you can submit 3 variations of posters which is a bonus as I always find it difficult to choose one design as a final.

BREIF 4

Why have I chosen this brief?

I have chosen this brief because I really like cause it's for, in my level 04 group project I explored mental health issues and it was something really interesting to find more about and learn how many people it affects. I also like the opportunities it offers like going along to seminars to find out more about who and what your designing for. I think the RSA website's briefs were all really interesting and ethical which is another things I am interested in.

BREIF 5

The National Organization for Women Foundation hosts an annual poster contest to celebrate the Love Your Body Campaign. Winning posters will be chosen based on how well they counteract the media’s use of narrow, unrealistic, negative images of women and/or challenge advertisers that profit from women’s dissatisfaction with their bodies.

Posters should be graphically attractive and use a dynamic message. We especially look for images that demonstrate beauty is not limited by body size, body type, ethnicity, age or physical appearance. The winning posters will be displayed in schools and other public settings, so please consider this when designing your poster.

Poster should be no larger than 9" x 12". Artists may submit multiple posters in the same category, but may not submit posters in different categories. Category is determined by the age of the designer/artist. Only original artwork will be considered.

There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

Entries are accepted from all countries.

Prize

• $250 prize for open competition (non-student)
• $200 prize for college (undergraduate or graduate student)
• $150 prize for high school student
• $100 prize for elementary or middle school student

One poster will be selected as the grand prize winner to serve as the official 2014 Love Your Body Campaign poster and will be featured on the NOW Foundation web site. The grand prize winner will be chosen from among the four category winners and will receive an additional prize of $100.

Why have I chosen this brief?

I chose this brief because I think the love your body campaign is something that all people should embrace. My level 04 context essay and researched into how women are affected by the media and advertising, which is something that I think is a big issue. I like the scope of the competition in regards to using photography, graphics and other multidisciplinary designs to create this poster. The competition is free and again the designer completely benefits from this brief and the chance to have you work displayed in a magazine.

I found this exercise really interesting to complete, initially it was quite hard to find briefs that were in date or that sponsored my interest's. I also learnt a lot about the fee's, rules and regulations of a brief and to read them carefully before selecting them so myself or my work gets exploited. I am really excited to start the D & AD live briefs as the preview briefs look really interesting and something I want to be a apart of.
