OUGD504: END OF MODULE EVALUATION

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Over the course of the module I feel I have really applied myself by expanding my knowledge about the different print processes and graphic design as a whole. In my studio development time I went to inductions and practiced these methods which included foiling, laser cut, embossing, screen printing, book binding and photography.

With obtaining these skills, I felt that I have applied them appropriately and effectively although I did face some trial and error along the way.

I have also spent a lot of time doing primary research weather it be through visits to studio’s, galleries and contacting businesses for samples. I think this has also developed my approach to my designs as I feel I am more knowledgeable but about the subject.

I have also learnt a lot about website design, this is something I have always wanted to experiment with and have tried to propose in previous briefs. I feel with the knowledge I’ve obtained through workshops and off my own accord that I have developed the work to the best of my availability and can create a standard working website.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The approaches and methods of design production I have developed is how to use a multitude of processes affectively. I have definitely spent a lot of time in this module experimenting with laser cut and screen printing which is something I feel really confident within.

I also feel the concept workshops and the idea brainstorms have contributed to the production of my work as it has made me expand my idea’s and consider things I would never usually think about. For example the meaning behind colours, the audience wants and needs and so on.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think the strengths I can identify in my work is the concepts and development behind them. I felt that instead of thinking of one thing and running with it I constantly questioned myself why it is appropriate. This has enabled me to create some strong ideas and improved the outcome of my work.

I also think the final aesthetic of my work has drastically improved from the year before. I have started to take into consideration colour, stock types and font choices and have taken care of my work a lot more.

I think I have also build a lot of confidence as a designer, I think by putting myself down or comparing myself to others is not good for me, so I will keep a positive attitude. I have also spent a lot of time speaking to other course tutors and having a an urge to learn more about what can do to better my work. I feel like I have had a lot of determination and dedication to finish my designs to a good standard.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

A weakness of mine in this module I think was my concept boards, I feel like I could of developed them a lot further and is something I am deffiantely going to revisit.

Time management has been both a strength and weakness of mine on all 3 modules, I feel like I spent a lot of time on certain projects, than others which can be seen by the standard of my work.

I think I also need to not take on to many things at once, in my progress crit I expressed to loraine I had a job with a 24hour contract. By having this job I fell behind on my work quite a bit. However I thought about my priorities and quit my job close to the end of the module which is something I wish I had done earlier.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Keep a consistent balance of blogging and practical work. I felt I was achieving a lot in the first brief but when the other modules were being proposed I started to fall behind - Myself and my housemates have organised blogging nights and if they fail to do them they will be punished!

Not to dwell to much on a design, I spent a lot of time experimenting on the first module which is a good thing, but at the same time I wasted a lot of time. I think I should make my decision quicker which benefit the process of my work.

I think I lack consistency in some parts of my work like my annotations and my design, in the next module I want to be able to keep up a higher level of this to make sure I can progress further.

Although I did a lot of development I think I could have produced evern more outcomes to experiment with for print and web, I think this is down to the fact I had left it a little bit late.
I think I need to take more care with spelling I have made a lot of errors with this in my work in this module. Even though I took the time to proof ready my work, I think I need to make other people read it to make sure it makes sense.

DESIGN FOR PRINT + WEB: WEBSITE IN CONTEXT

I made some digital mock ups of my website, in context. I did this to see if it was responsive through different platforms.

DESIGN FOR PRINT: FURTHER DEVELOPMENT

After creating my menu's and doing my photoshoot I realised that I had made a massive spelling mistake on my work. I had been spelling 'Asender' instead of 'Ascender' this was something I hadn't released until the vital stages or was brought up in the crit by any of my peers.

Although I had already taken photo's of my work, I knew I could overcome this problem by editing the images.

I made the conscious decision to re-print my work again and editing the mistakes as it made my work look unprofessional. Luckily I booked a slot before hand in so I could rectify this.

DESIGN FOR PRINT + WEB: PHOTO SHOOT

In my studio development time, I decided to book a photography slot to take images of the work I had completed for the module. I booked a slot from 3:30 till 8 which enabled me to have enough time to experiment with light fixtures and the positioning of my items. I spoke to David from photography and he was really helpful in helping me set up my work correctly for product shots and lighting.

To take my images I had borrow out a lot of equipment which included
  • Light Starting Kit: Includes 2 headlights, umbrellas and cables.
  • Cannon Camera
  • Portable Flash
  • Tripod
These items enabled me to get a variety of shots and styles. For the glass related shots, David recommended that I use a clear board and put one of the headlights underneath it to create a reflective quality. Following the other shots I used a white infinity roll and taped it to the top of the wall to create an ongoing white background.

DESIGN FOR PRINT + WEB: WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

Although the main design production of this brief for me is print based, I also had to create a website to go alongside the website.

To create the website I drew up some thumbnail designs for me to create a variation of ideas.

From my thumbnails I felt that these one's would work with the overall aesthetic of my printed material.

Home

To create my website I used Adobe Illustrator to mock up how the webpages would look like.

After some consideration I decided to not to include the white boarder around the webpage because I felt it took away from the simplicity of the rest of my work and looked tacky.

I then applied some slider buttons to indicate what images would be on the home page.

I then applied some images of what the restaurant interior would possibly look like and changed to buttons to circles to match the logo.

After changing the buttons I then considered the whole aesthetic of the website and thought it would be better to make them square again to make the design look cohesive.

About

To create my about page I mocked up the about, contact details and address for the restaurant.

Finally I added the images I had taken from my photoshoot.

Menu

Initially I wanted to propose a drop down navigation for my menu, but when mocking this up it looked slightly over crowed.

I then proposed some side options but the big box didn't look aesthetically pleasing so I decided to experiment further.

I then created separate buttons for each of the options and overall I thought this work successfully.

I then re-added the scroll bar to the webpage as an option for users to flick through the menu and a pdf download option to see the menu in a bigger view.

Reserve

I mocked up the layout of the reserve page with just a simple image and a button which would re-locate the user to an email page for them to book a table.

I then added my images from the photoshoot and experimented with the type.

I then went back to my original mock up as I thought this worked best with the whole aesthetic of the pages.

Overall the process of creating th website was made a lot easier by the thumbnails I created prior. I had a strong idea of what I wanted the website to look like due to the production of my printed collateral. If I had more to for the module I would have liked to attempt at coding and creating the actual website.

DESIGN FOR PRINT + WEB: FINAL CRIT

For todays crit, I prepared a selection of design boards and mock up restaurant accessories to show to my group. I was in group 3 for my crit and this consisted of Jasper, Will, Joe, Joe H, Lizzy, Emily and Rinesh.

The feedback I received for my work I felt was very useful in helping me develop my work further and generating new ideas to make sure it met the brief.

Strengths

  • Visual Identity well founded and recognisable
  • Maintain white on black objects
  • Simplicity and minimalism works

Areas of Improvement
  • Menu backboard is too crowed, maybe to low brow. Minimal looks more professional - consider a cross hatch design?
  • Don't fuss with promotional material for the restaurant, it's a high class restaurant and it will promote itself.
  • Consider digital aspects more.

Considerations

  • Look at 'Aqua' bar and restaurant on oxford street, the black door and black house.
  • Ascender could maybe do with lifts and going up, this could be incorporated in your proposals.
  • Mail shot for private functions or invite only.
  • Don't propose the pasta jars, you audience are less likely to buy into it.
  • Consider speed - for drinks will be quick, food longer,
  • Packaging delivery box or a on the side if you wanter to sell the delivery pots.
  • Stock quality, thick, textured.
  • Create typography out of ice.

One of the things I was concerned about the most was if my restaurant was typographically themed enough. My group came up with some good considerations which are listed below. But the main one I chose to move forward with was how I could talk about the drinks.

They suggested I could refer to house spirits as bold, light, regular and condensed referring to the strength of the drink. I really thought this was a witty idea and decided to make an extra drinks board to refer to this.

I found today's crit really beneficial in the development of my work, I will take on board the comments and develop my work accordingly through the action plan below.

Action

  • Experiment with menu names
  • Strip back menu board design
  • Begin to design the web and app features.

DESIGN FOR PRINT + WEB: PRINT

Menu

For the production of my menu I decided to print on A4 white card and mount it onto mount board to give it a structured feel. I was unsure weather I should print the menu's on a glossy stock, however the outcome of the way there were was just as I expected.
