ILLUMINATI PUBLICATION: DEVELOPMENT

After researching artists and design inspiration for my publication I started off with some initial sketches to develop my ideas.

I Started of with some leaflet designs as an option, these designs could have also been transfered as a book. I wanted to create these designs for time reasons just incase I didn't have the time or materials to create my intial idea.

I the experimented with a few book designs annotating my idea's, I put a lot of detail into a few designs as I had a strong idea of what I wanted to create from my research.

I then chose two of my designs and made prototypes to see which one looked best physically and the time it would take to create them. I chose the first design from my leaflet sketches and the second one from my book designs as I felt they were the strongest, relevant to the brief and aesthetically pleasing.

PROTO-TYPE 1

PUBLICATION PAGES. 4 FOLDS FOR 4 SUBJECTS

FOLDS INTO PYRAMID

This prototype was very simplistic and easy to make, however I felt that the design wasn't that inspiring and that there might be difficulty fitting all the infographics onto 4 small pages.

FINAL PROTO-TYPE

I chose to use proto-type 2 as I felt I could create it easily and that it was contemporary and unique. There was enough room for the publication to fit inside and it was interactive.

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

To start creating my idea. I used Adobe Illustator and created a net for my pyramid using the triangle tool and adjustment tool bars to make sure it was exactly aligned. I then made markings on the outside so I knew where it could be folded.

I then started focusing on the Illuminati emblem to go on the front flap of the book casing. In my group feedback one of my peers suggested that I recreated the logo. I began using a vector graphic of an eye and live traced it. I then used the pen tool to create the rays coming from the eye like in the emblem. I experimented with the weight, alignment and style.

EXPERIMENT

I used the vector tool and gradually build the emitting rays round the eye, experimenting with positioning and alignment.

EXPERIMENT

I then experimented with length and width and decided to keep the rays coming from the bottom of the eye as the original uses them all around and I wanted to create something new.

FINAL EYE DESIGN

I added a white eye drop inside the pupil to make the eye look more mysterious and I think this small element made the design nice.

After figuring out the design of my net and emblem, I then added the colours and theme I collated from my research and initial drawings.

ORIGINAL

I trimmed the outer eye parts that didn't fit onto the net to give it clean aethetic, I also contemplatd weather I could use them as a fastening techinque.

STAR NEBULAR TEXTURE

I inverted the colour of the emblem first and put it onto the front of the box. I felt this design looked to busy and over barring so I opted for using it as a feature inside the box as I originally intended. I sources the Star Nebular photographer from - M16

BLACK DESIGN

I used black as an option and felt that the colour really worked well with the contrasting eye, I then added a small part of the star nebular texture inside the pupil to make the eye stand out more and come to life.

PRINTED ON A1

I originally intended the box to be the size of A3, but due to no stock I opted to print it on A1. After it being folded and scored I thought the box would come out smaller as I intended. I really liked the printed version as I felt my initial sketch had come to life through the process of development.

INSIDE                                                     CLOSED

I put the box together using glue and it fit perfectly. However the size was slightly larger than I intended.

PUBLICATION DESIGN

To begin the design of my publication I again drew up a net using the shape tool on Illustrator  I also added cutting edges so I knew where the publication could be folded to fit into the box. I followed the design I used in my sketches and later in my prototype.

PAGE LAYOUT.

FRONT COVER DEVELOPMENT.
I used the same them colours of black and white to keep cohesion with the outside of the box. I used a font called 'Every True Type is Wise' which I downloaded from dafont. I used this font as I thought it was modern and had a real graphic element that worked well with the vector eye. I also included a barcode on the back of the book for when it's in retail and sale.
FINAL
I really liked my initial development but I cleaned up the design further by making sure the eye was attached consistently and adding the texture within the iris to keep consistency with the outside of the box.

CONTENTS DEVELOPMENT
I continued to keep the same design features as I used with the front cover. I wanted the book to be simplistic and clean cut.
FINAL CONTENTS DESIGN

I decided due to the blank black space I could introduce the Star Nebular texture again as a continuous theme within my design.

For the publication pages I used the same theme consistently through out, using Myrid pro text at 6pt to fit onto the structure of the triangle. I also kept the headers the same as the front cover text using 18pt and a white outline stroke of 3pt.

I then developed these pages further by adding page numbers in the front cover text. I also added pictures I edited in Photoshop with the circle crop tool. Originally I thought I would use a triangle shape, but I didn't want to overkill the theme and I felt it created visual diversity.

The further reading page was added at the end as a continuation of the subject. I felt this feature was a good idea for people who wanted to study the subject further and explore the really reliable sources I found in my reseach.

PRINTED FINALS - UNSTITCHED

Overall I was really pleased with the design of my publication considering it's difficult structure. However some of the files I changed to tiff. changed the background to a lighter dark when printed. For future reference I will work with one editing suite or print a small prototype before printing all the pages.
