INDESIGN INTRODUCTION

Preporation for print publications through using the Adobe InDesign software.


Working towards a printed end product.


Letter, legal and tabloid are American standard page sizes due to the product being international.
More options give yuou oppertunittes to assit your layout.

Columns: divide the page up into a different about of colums with guides.

Gutter: space between the columns.

Margins: Guides on the page with a specific distance in from the page, which allows consitent white space on every page.

In the More Options ..

Bleed: Trimming of the page after the print. Image has to extend over the page, so when trimmed it will be precise. 3 mm is usually chosen.

Slug: Another area outside the page, an area larger than the bleed area. Used to contain printer marks. Can help to determine folds in a leaflet also with dotted lines.

Facing Pages: If the finished publication is a book or editorial format the check box should be ticked. (A folded page)

Document

Red: Bleed guide

Black: Edge of page

Purple: Page margin



File > Document setup allows you to make changed to the format

Layout> Margins and columns allows you to change the choice and size of them

Pages pallette: allows you to se the properties, every pallet has a menu. The pallet allows you to navigate through the pages easily.



The menu will give you options to manage the pages in the document. You cam also add pages to the document.


This is a facing pages document, to create a document without a spread simply uncheck the box when creating a document.


The pallete shows how it's suppose to be printed if a book, front cover, spread and back.


Options to add guides through dragging from the ruler down.

Layout> Create guides, specify where certain aspects of the publication can go.

TEXT


Blue: text frame for precision



When you want to decide where text goes without the content this tool can be used.


Type crossbar allows you to change, the font, size and shape.

Type> font/size

Direct selection tool> allows to move text box and shape with the text moving consistenly.

Click and drag just box moves.
Click and hold text moves with it.

Two text boxes

Green: alignment of multiple boxes.

Red square: text overflow indicator.

File> place> for text and images into a frame.


By clicking on the red square a preview of the text will appear and by creating a new box it will paste into another and vary if the size is changed.


IMAGE

PHOTOSHOP 
when preparing images to go into InDesign or print.

  1. File format- .tif or .psd not jpeg
  2. 300dpi resolution.
  3. CMYK/Greyscale colour mode.
  4. Actual size intended for InDesign format.
ILLUSTRATOR
considerations when placing a illustrator file. 
  1. File format - .ai
  2. CMYK colour mode


Parts of the image can be cropped by the frame.

Content grabber: Circles in the middle of the frame which lets you reposition it.

Brown line: The image

Blue line: Frame

Green line: Visual guide



Rectangle frame tool: Graphic image tool used to put an in image into a particular frame.


Vector artwork is infinitely scalable so there is more flexibility working with illustrator files.
