A INTRODUCTION TO TYPE 1

What is typography?

The origins of type started here
  • STONE: gravestones, walls
  • SABEL: inky, oriental, brush
  • BONE: thick, quill
  • WOOD: strong
  • LEAD: stiff, letter press
  • SILICONE: loose, digital
These man made and natural materials where the basis of how type was created.

Typography definition:

1. The art and technique of printing with movable type.
2. The composition of printed material from movable type.
3.
The arrangement and appearance of printed matter.

For a previous task I was assigned to collect 5 different typefaces that exuded different meanings and have them in both upper and lowercase. Myself and my partner then decided on 5 categories to choose from to arrange them into.

5  categories

  • Serif
  • Sans serif
  • Modern
  • Traditional
  • Bold

I then looked at my partners typefaces that they had printed and I had to identify which font they had selected, on the website www.identifont.com and researched into one font further.

A history into the Courier Typeface.

Courier falls under the category of mono-spaced and is classified as a slab serif typeface.

Mono-space: A typeface where the letters and characters adopt the same amount of horizontal space

Slab serif: A typeface characterized by thick, block serifs.

The typeface was created by Howard 'bud' Kettler in 1955 and was later refined by Adrian Fugler from the IBM a composer for the electronic series. The type was inspired by the style of a typewriter. IBM deliberately chose not to copyright, trademark or design patent protection for the font it is now used all over computer software to this day. Due to IMB not copyrighting it at the time it now can not be copyrighted and is used royalty free.

As a mono-spaced font it style is contemporary and being created in the 1990's is still used in the typewriting industries today.

Until 2004 Courier became industry standard font, used for all screen placed until later being replaced by Times New Roman. It was replaced as there was a desire for a more modern and legible font.
