WHAT IS VISUAL LITERACY?

  • To construct meaning from visual images and type.
  • Interpreting visual literacy of the present, past from a range of cultures and historical contexts.
  • Producing images that effectively communicate a message to an audience.
  • Visual communication is a process of sending a receiving messages. A shared understanding of signs, symbols, gestures and objects
  • Is affected by context, audience, media and method of distribution.
  • For a language to necessarily exist a group of people have to agree that one thing will stand for another.

When looking at this symbol the words that come to mind to represent it would be
  • Add
  • Plus
  • Positive
The words all have different linguistic devices but somehow still are what comes to mind when looking at this one symbol due to it not having a context

Compared to this we would associate the + as a mathematical plus due to the fact it has been put into a context.

  • Context is important to interpret meaning: historical, social, political ect.
  • Understanding principles learnt throughout life and culture

  • Semiotics: Sign, Symbols, Signifiers.
