VISUAL LITERACY: THE LANGUAGE OF GRAPHIC DESIGN.

Readability, Legibility + Heirachy.

Visual metaphore: to transfer the meaning from one image to another. Although the images may have no close relationship, a metaphor conveys an impression about something relatively unfamiliar by drawing a comparison between it and something unfamiliar.

Visual metonym: A symbolic image that is used to make reference to something with a more literal meaning e.g cross on a church. Unlike a visual synecdoche the two images bear a close relationship but are not linked.

Visual synecdoche: this term is applied when a part is used to represent the whole or vice versa. Quite simply the main subject is substituted for something that is inherently connected to it.

To begin the session we used the words from the pharse "who are you?" and placed the separate words and weights into different arrangements.

What we began to realise was the size, weight and style of the font indicated the pitch, volume or emphasis on a word and began to read them out baring in mind these things.

We also listened to our partners say the phrase and visually recorded what words they were putting emphasis on indicated using the bold letters and pitch and volume indicated through size.

Some where easy to identify and other where hard to clarify due to the tone of voice they said them in.

This task allowed us to think of how to visually use letters to create meaning, depth and to portray a message.

Subtle elements and clever innovative ways of using type can signify the meaning. For example the ripped sheet textured used in this type bring anchorage to the phrase as when people make mistakes when writing or drawing the rip up the paper and throw it away.

Heirachy is a significant part of editorial design. The text usually consist a format that makes the readers eye move around the page and delivers the info.

Modifying the colour and size also can make the text stand out. Bright and subtle changes of colour and size can make specific words or phrases more apparent to it's audience.
