Using the principles, processes and resources introduced in the first four studio sessions we have to develop a series of practical investigations into the development of new letterforms and fonts.
The Process - Use the individual anatomical elements of your chosen fonts (Gothic, Roman, Block, Script) to create a range of possible new letterforms.
INITIAL LETTERFORMS
Block: Black Oak
Roman: Cambria
Gothic: Cenutry Gothic
Script: Bikham Script Pro
PRACTICAL INVESTIGATION
In order to do my 260 variations I cut the letters forms A + B by anatomy and systematically experimented with all the parts.
VARIATION EXPERIMENT
These are examples of 50 I created. The process was challenging as some of the stems made the a's look like d's. However it was an interesting experiment.
To decide on which letterforms I wanted to create, I selected my top 5 to go froward with and create a font out of.
For the letters C, X, Y + Z I hand rendered them by using elements of each letter to create the full letter.
HYBRID FONTS
1. COSMOPOLITAN
This is a hybrid of Century and Gothic, combining both styles was the easiest out of the set and looks most legible. The font is sophisticated and clean cut with the sharp edge of the serif ends on particular curves of the letterforms.
2. VOLATILE
The font is a hybrid of Block and Roman, I felt this font was the least successful as it looked awkward and asymmetric. The font is very abstract and disordered and the dictionary deffintion of the title means Explosive & Changeable.
3. RECONDITE
The font is a hybrid of Gothic, Roman and Script to create an abstract and modernist style font. I found creating this font was quite difficult in maintaining consistency. The dictionary definition of the title is Mysterious & Obscure.
4. BOLD & SWEET
The font is a hybrid of Block and Script. Using these extreme opposite styles makes the font look whimsical with an edge. The process of creating this font was quite easy although I had to make a few alterations due to the different sizes of the normal typefaces to make it look even.
5. PHOENIX
This font is a hybrid of Roman and Script I liked this font the most because I thought it flowed consistently in style and looked the most legitimate. The dictionary definition of the title is Charming & Precious.
