TYPOGATUEX: AI CAKE

For the Typogateaux brief we had to either work alone in a pair or as group of 3 and create a cake in the shape of a letterform or a glyph. I worked with Victoria Redmond and we decided to try and create a chocolate orange cake in the style of the Adobe Illustrator button.

We used morrisons chocolate cake mix, 1 egg and water to mix. We then added the mix to a large square plastic container to bake the cake in to create the square icon design.

We used Adobe Illustrator to make a large template with the letters 'A & i' for the stencil and cut them out with a sterilised scalpel.

Victoria placed the stencil on top of the large square and cut out the letter 'A' from it. This process was more difficult than we initially thought and the cake started crumbling once she cut it.

We repeated the process for the letter 'I' which was at lot easier than the 'A' because its a simpler letterform. We covered the large square cake base in marzipan the same as with the letters. We should of used icing as it would have looked more pleasing.

We had to cover the cake twice so it was thick like the icon. We use orange food colouring and flavouring to paint the cake orange, making the back darker than the letters to represent the Ai logo. The food colouring didn't really take to the mazipan coating which is something we consider next year.

I think our cake visually turned out really well. The colours resembled the colours of the icon and so did the structure. However I though it might of looked a bit more appetising if we had used icing instead of marzipan!
