LETTER PRESS AT VERNON STREET

To begin our session we were introduced to the different typefaces we could use for our quote or song lyric.

Because my from the song was quite bold and controversial I used the Univers Ultra Bold to emphasise this. The lettere were arranged into different sections and we were given a guide to help show us were all the letters both upper and lowercase were, including the glyphs.

We then set out rules to 30 cm, as this was the correct size for our wooden guide. I then started spelling out my song lyric making sure the groves of the letters were faced upwards and were backwards. This was to ensure that it printed our coreectly due to the motion of the letter press.

I then took my quote from the holder and placed it into a grid that was supported by thick wooden blocks and secured by bolts to make sure it would stay in place.

We then were shown how to use the letter press and using our grid there was a guideline on the machine of how far it could go. We then secured this again with more bolts so it wouldn't move around when the roller was placed over the top.

We then experimented with different stocks such as tracing paper, newsprint, white card and white paper. This enabled us to see how the text would looks in different formats.

These were the final outcomes, that I produced.

To finish the session we cleaned the ink from our letterforms and placed each letter in it's correct holder by using the guide we was given at the begging of the session.

I really enjoyed this workshop and felt it was definitely something I would like to work with more!
