PRESENTING FINDINGS TO THE GROUP

For the half term period, my group which consisted of Sam, Vicky +  Lizzie were asked to research this question. 'What are grids, columns , gutters & margins?' We all chose a word individually and came up with these conclusions.

Grids:- A grid is a 2 dimensional structure made of intersecting horizontal + vertical axes used to structure content. grids serves as a guideline which helps designers organise their content in a rational + aesthetically pleasing way. A grid enables a designer to align elements into columns and rows which creates a wide variety of layouts.

Columns:- Columns run vertically down the page and usually used to break up large bodies of text that can't fit in a single box of text on a page - vertical blocks of content on a page separated by gutters or rules columns improve composition readability.

Gutters:- The inside margins or blank space between two facing pages in the gutter the gutter space is that extra space allowance used to accommodate the binding in books and magazines. The amount of gutter needed varies depending on the binding method.

Margins :- The edge or border of something , Margins can have a influence on the overall feel of a page of print.Different margins are chosen and created for the style of the content. This affects the aesthetics.

We reviewed what we had learned over the past few weeks, with our peers and Phil to show what we had learnt over the past weeks.

We was also asked to research further into some vocabulary which is documented on my context blog: http://j-saunders1215-dc.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/layout-vocabulary-research.html

For the next part of the session, we all reviewed what everyone in the class had been doing in regards to layout and structure. As a class, we all went round a gave '4' constructive criticisms on A5 sheets of paper.

I presented a development of a layout I was working on for a group publication.

The feed back I recieved.

Positives
  • Good presentation of image
  • Nice segregated columns easy on the eye
  • Good use of columns, nice type and enough negative space to balance the text
  • Thoughtful structured columns
  • , easy on the eye because there are no more than 10 words per line
  • Good use of bold text
  • I like the use of columns and text-image ratio.
  • Clear use of grid
  • Nice use of columns and rows, hierarchy of text gives clear indication which text is more important ect.
Considerations
  • Text could be justified
  • 'Completely' in the quote is difficult to read
  • Text could have been justified and more words put onto one line.
  • Maybe think about rearranging 'Completely' - readability wise.
Myself and my group then discussed what feedback we got and weather we found it useful. I agreed with some of the considerations, specifically the altering of the 'Completely'  due to restrictions of readability. I felt that the considerations I was given where quite brief, so I asked the people in my group to be more specific.

Group Feed Back
  • Consider spacing out the content more, maybe changing the size of the image.
  • The text is hard to read due to it's point size, so you could experiment with that to improve readability.
I found this session really useful as it gave me an idication of how to improve my layout and solid rules and tips to consider in future productions.
