Before the session began as a class we looked at the Nasa logo. The nasa logo both came in a red and black design.
The red in logo connotes a sense of danger and warning which is relevant as the nature of a astronaughts job is fly into space. It also connotes a sense of patriotism as the USA flag has red within it.
The black in logo connotes seriousness and makes it adaptable on any platform that the design can be transferred to.
We then discussed the use of font used in the logo, which is very futuristic and adapts to the fact that it's a company based around space. It's bold, rounded, aerodynamic and tube like which creates the shapes of the spacecraft and infers with the idea of space travel.
The 'AS' connected in the logo also could be a acronym for astronaught in space. The connection of the letters also creates a sense of unity and spirit which again links back to the american patriotism. The curvature of the 'A' in the logo create a type for image feel as they look like the tops of a space craft.
The logo has three main official designs, although the one with stylised red curved text (the "worm") has been retired from official use since 1992 and rebranded due to accident in space were people died and had a negative stigma attached to it.
We then started the session and presented our findings. I found the session to be really insightful and our group discussed some really interesting points about certain logo's.
- Psychologically yellow and gold can promote hunger e.g Mcdonalds, Morrisons, Fast Food logos.
- Psychologically red and white can promote thirst
- Negative space creates outlines of letters or images that relate to the brand
- Italics create movement within a logo.
- Red colours used to promote danger and strength
- Neutral and earth colours create an ethical feel
From our discussions I had a few questions from my own logo's that were answered
Question: I'm not sure what the ring outside the logo represents?
Answer: Possibly it's the chocolate coco pod cut in half and the texture and groves on the ouside of the pod create the shape.
Question: I'm not sure why there is a ring around the illustration of the man and what it represents?
Answer: It could represent an ice cream cone from a birds eye view and the blue works well with representing the coldness and relates to brands ethos.
Through our discussions we found that a lot of us had different interpretations, on what the concept or meaning behind a design was.
We were then asked to research and analyse a logo, I decied to look further into some of the logo's my group had brought in as I had a personal interest in them and wanted to find out more.
Laura's Logo:
This is a design for a Hungary based magazine called Lack, the stems and leaves of the letterforms within the logo are not very defined, which is possibly due to the magazines name to anchor the point of the brand. I think this a really clever concept as it creates synergy between the design and the brand name. The font used is a san serif design which creates a sophisticated and professional style, this also relates to the brands ethos which is a high fashion magazine.
The logo and branding was designed by Kissmiklos from Budapest and this is a statement about what he intended for the brand.
"I wanted to design a new progressive cover concept. By my opinion, most of the fashion magazines are boring, there’s always a photo and a name on it, but I wanted a more progressive and lively solution. My concept was to visualise the lack on the typography."
In further research I found the logo variations the design company attempted before coming up with the final design.
The designs all relate to his original concept, of there being a lack in the typography which has be in the focus point in all his designs. I found this really interesting to look at and how a small concept can create so many variations that are all clear and relevant.
Roxie's Logo:
The logo design is for a sushi bar, and the designer has used fish, all joined together as possibly a sexual pun for 'karma sutra' and is a play on words for the food companies name. The alignment of the type and image could also replicate a piece of sushi, as the lettering at the bottom could be the base of the rice and the image on top could be the meat which works well together visually. The colours in the design also reflect the culture of Japan through it's countries flag and were in fact sushi originated from. I think this is a really interesting concept as not only is the concept designed around the idea of food and the play on words but also it's historical and cultural factors.
The designer for this logo is called Kasper Graham, who has possibly used the perfect circle technique to create the logo through the inspiration of a fishes body.
Jordans Logo:
Initially when analysing this logo, I though the brand 'Habitat' was a organic supermarket logo, due to the colour scheme of green. It connotes a sense of freshness and health and the vectors of the leaves create the organic and fresh produce feel. The negative space in the letters which is filed with green looks like bulbs that have been planted.
However when Jordan presented this logo, he then said it was for a skateboarding company, and that the negative space within the letters and the colour infills replicate skateboard wheels. The designer for this logo is called Joe Castrucci and I found it really interesting how to an unknowing audience about skating like myself didn't find clarity in this logo.
There are some design developments the artist made for this brand that could have possibly worked better.
