The final product . .

Our final design and presentation for the flashcards.

We designed a necklace so that students can wear them round their necks and socialise with others through asking people from different regions about the phrases and acting them out.

We also made A6 pocked sized flash cards that can be placed in the back pocket and are handy

Finally we also had some A6 versions in the freshers packs as a reminder of where they would be distributed.

For feedback we decided on have a tear sheet within the fresher pack that students can comment on and post into a feedback box located in the mosaic bar.

Group Critic

To help develop our work and to hear from our target audience, we had a group critic were we presented, discussed and received suggestions to improve our flashcards to our peers.

The session for the day was set into 8 different sections
  • Prepare
  • Present
  • Listen
  • Clarify
  • Reflect
  • Evaluate
  • Feedback: Opinions, evidence, suggestions
  • Discussion

We presented our flashcards on a A3 piece of paper and held them up whilst myself and others in the group spoke about what we had created. Covering aspects such as the purpose, target market, our intentions for distribution and tone of voice.

After our presentation to the other group, they deliberated ways we could improve what we had made. This helped us find the problems in our work and resolve them through the handouts they presented to us with their questions and comments on.

Our peers said our presentation was clearly identified and understood. The colour schemes were clever and represented the regions successfully and the cards where relatable, funny and simple. However they also gave us some interesting points to consider.

Questions and comments that stood out to us where
  • Would you consider a different layout?
  • Could you make the text bigger so it's easier to read?
  • Will the phrases be understood?
  • What would be on the back?
  • Everyone should have an oppertunity to speak in the final presentation.
So with advice taken on board we made the changes necessary to improve our product which came to our final design idea, ready for printing.

As a group we discussed the layout and decided to change the cards from portrait to landscape. We also moved the faces and quotes to the back page and had the region name as the front cover. We also made the speech bubbles bigger thus making the text bigger and more spacious. We made sure to add whether the letter was a noun or adjective and made phonetic spellings more clear.

The critic made a significant change to our design and the development of the flashcards, through listening to the advice given and making the right changes. The session was very insightful and helped make our product more suitable for our target market.

As for our presentation we re-visited our slide show and made changes to make it more in depth and more attractive. We also assigned a slide each for us to read out, so everyone had an opportunity to speak.

Presentation

Slide show. . .

We created a slide show to present to our year, so they can see the direction we are going in. With this presentation we expect them to be entertained yet informed. With this slide show we hope it helps our peers highlight points we have missed out to make our product a success in the upcoming group critic.

Fonts and Flash card development

Fonts. . .

We wanted fonts that would speak for themeselves so we went on da-font.com and selected some that stood out to us.
After selecting our chosen fonts we then went onto placing them onto flash cards and played with colour schemes and layout.

Then finally added the images for the completed version of the flash card.

Intial Ideas . .

Our initial ideas stemmed from making

  • Dictionary : Informative but not humorous, too long.
  • CD - Casset tape - Download : Not easily and instantly accessible, anti-social.
  • Leaflet : Generic
  • Youtube blog - Video tutorial : Anti- social and not instantly accesible.
  • Poster : Generic
But we came to a conclusion that we would make small flashcards/booklet that would be distributed into fresher packs as its instantly accessible, a great conversation starter and simple entertainment.

Design . .

To get a grasp of how to design of our flashcard/booklet we brainstormed ideas and came up with making  caricature of the stereotypical person and having 5 top phrases around them with the meaning and phonetic spelling also, so our audience can understand and learn how to say them.

Character Design . .

After Identifying which accents we wanted to use, we brainstormed ideas as a group of the features we wanted our characters to have, specifically stereotypical ones so they where easy to identify and relate with. Most of our inspiration came from the reality TV programmes we watched such as The only way is Essex, Geordie shore and Desperate scousewives. We also wanted the characters to look cartoon like so it would increase the humorous tone we wanted to portray.

Through our research of cartoons and charactures we came to a conclusion that we would do the characters in the style of Dean Gray a previous Leeds College of Art student as we felt his work was inspiring and would tie in with the humorous tone of voice we wanted to portray.

We then discussed the top traits of each character and drew small sketches of what we thought would best represent each region and then transferred the ideas onto Photoshop to create them.
