PARTNER TYPEFACE

Partner typeface

Pattern process and practice.

To start the process of my typeface I decided to create my pattern first that would be incorporated into the design. I traced things that where relevant to my partners interests and likes. I also wanted to hand drawn it because it gives off a vintage comic book effect feel, which was the style I liked the most.

I traced his favourite football teams logo but the detail in the badge was really intricate so I made a simplified version but felt it wasn't effective.

I also traced his star sign which is Aquarius  I liked how the sign looked like lightening bolts and are a prominent feature in comic book styles.

I also traced a football as it's what he plays and also enjoys.

I then tried to make a comic book style drawing of him to incorporate into the pattern. I followed the steps from a book I rented called "Drawing cutting edge comics" and came up with this final design.

I also traced a punching fist, angry face, speech bubbles and a kicking foot from the book that I considered on incorporating.

After tracing all the images I wanted to encorporate into the pattern I scanned them in and using the magic wand tool on Photoshop I cut around the acess areas and played with the format  and layout.

After coming up with the final format of my design I decided I needed to make a neater brick wall so I traced another design.

With the final design fininished I decided to make the outline stronger by using the treshold filter and it created smooth crisp outline like it had been drawn by pen.

I also made a back up design of just the icons on their own if I wanted to encorporate them into the glyphs or exeperiment with other designs.

 Digital type experiments and process.

After my digital type research I decided on two typefaces to experiment with, which was Geomany and Praetorium
Praetorium font.
Geomancy font.

I traced 4 letter forms from the alphabet and tested out four possibilities on how I could create a 3D outline and experiment with line lengths to portray Jaspers height and confident personality.

This process helped me see how the letter forms worked with being manipulated and I decided on using Geomancy as there was a lot of space within the shape for me to experiment with the comic book pattern I had in mind to draw within the 3D curve.

After choosing my font I then hand drew more letters and experimented with trying to create the 3D curve on each letter. However I felt that as a set they were not consistent.

To overcome this problem I decided to practice on other editing programmes such as Photoshop and Illustrator to see what the outcome would be.

I created 3D outlines on the letter D and tried to fit my pre made pattern into the hole. Due to the positioning of the angle it didn't fit in and the compact size of it left a lot of negative space and didn't show the detail in the Illustration.

Another attempt I tried to make the typeface lighter and using the crop and eraser tools on Photoshop I cut around the image to make a clear defined shape, however I still wasn't happy with the design.
I then attempted my initial idea again and tried to make the 3D shape bigger and stretched the image to fit in the space but the lines where uneven and hard to draw on Photoshop, I also thought again the patterns quality was decreased.
I then tried the concept without the 3D shape and took elements from out of the pre-made pattern and made them into a collage around the letter and thought this was an easier concept that I could work with yet still remaining quality in the pattern.

I then decided to experiment with layer filter masks on top of shapes and came up with this design using the screen mask. Although not the whole image isn't clear it's still effective and applied to each letter could look interesting. I really wanted to created an authentic comic book style type and through my research the comics had a grainy effect to them. I used the half tone filter over the top of the image to give this effect and chose to use this final pattern design on all my letters.

I then used Illustrator to type out all my letter forms experimenting with spacing, format and layering. With one design I applied the same shape on top of another to make it more bold and re-try the 3D concept and then I tried a plain design.

I really liked the concept of the bolder letters however I knew once traced it wouldn't explicitly show the light and dark shading areas. Also some of the letters where not in exact shape making inconsistent.

I then just tried a plain design and I liked how each shape showed different aspects of the design creating a nice pattern. The image was clear and the typography was concise. However I didn't like the size or format of my letters so I experimented further with this and chose this layout.
