MESSAGE + DELIVERY - DISTRIBUTION

I was assigned a brief where I had to produce a mail shot that distributes, disseminates and reinforces my message to an appropriate list of recipients.

I wanted to create an engaging flyer that was, modern, edgy and relatable to my target audience which are students. I brainstormed some potential idea's and researched online envelope designs to inspire me.

MAIL SHOT DEVELOPMENT

I finally thought of creating a flyer with a moving centre of the character that I drew on my posters, showing her before and after drug use. I wanted to steer away from creating a flyer that was overloaded with information and wanted to create something engaging and a condensed sharper message of what my posters indicated. I chose to be in association with the drug advisors 'FRANK'. The helpline provides friendly and confidential advice for people who are curious about drugs or who are addicts. Their website also lists the names of various drugs from legal highs to ketamine tying in with the theme of my project, with the risks and side affects.

I created the flyers on Photoshop using a 21 x 9 cm format so it would fit perfectly into the envelope. I designed a front and back design that I would eventually stick together and have the character in the middle spinning around. I decided to use black thread to support this so the black and blue colour scheme would flow consistently. I created bold outlines around the character as a guide to cut around.

I made a few adjustments to the design and considered the feedback from the poster crit which was very helpful. I changed the font to Miskupa which was more legible to the previous font I used called Homeblock. I also decided to use geometric shapes instead of the drawing I did of the drugs because it was more crisp and clear. I used a dingbat from www.dafont.com called WS Simple Gallifreyan and the shapes not only represented the shape of pills abstractly but also thought bubbles.

ENVELOPE DEVELOPMENT

For the envelope I wanted to create a bold and serious design that would stand out amongst other letters. I decided to make the envelope black and in the acetate peep hole I wanted the girls dead eyes too peer out to bring anchorage to the serious tone.

I found it difficult to set up the dimensions of the envelope shape I wanted, so I printed both layouts out onto a full black page with the guidelines and cut it out. I also placed the image of the decaying eyes behind the acetate.

In keeping with the theme I wanted the mailing list to also be in sync with the rest of my designs, so I incorporated the geometric shapes onto the page as a side bar and used the same typography.

I had to take into consideration who I wanted to distribute the mail shots too. I chose popular health organisations, student accommodation headquarters so that all new students would receive them in their welcome packs and the students union health and well being sector so they would be distributed out on freshers week.
