After identifying my logo I decided to look further into my way finding iconography that I could use around the festival.
Creating signage and Icons is something I am not particularly use to doing or have done before, however I felt it was imperative for the festival in order for people to know where things would be and also I thought it would be a good opportunity to give myself a challenge!
I drew out some brainstorms and thumbnails of what I needed to show in my way finding signage and how I could do that clearly enough to make sense to the consumers.
Logo
I initially wanted to use the X throughout the way finding iconography to create a sense of consistency through my branding so I took the style of the original logo and used it as a basis for the rest of my designs.
Camping
For my camping sign I simply took the stem from the X's and applied it on both sides so that it would cohesively join without the split. I then took another stem and put it on the bottom of the 'X' to create a tent / tipi shape, to indicate to the consumers where the camping sight was.
Food and Drink
Again using the same structure from the previous sign, I started to apply more lines from the 'X' to create a knife and fork to indicate to the consumers where the food vans and catering areas would be.
Information
I wanted to incorporate the universal understanding for the information sign with the letter 'i' between the 'X' again to create consistency. I added to 'i' dots to the top and the bottom of the stem to reinforce the nature of the sign.
Bar
For the bar icon I simply used the same layout as the camping logo, and rotated it to make it look like a drinking glass. I then experimented with adding alcoholic bubbles to reinforce the nature of the sign and continued to experiment until I decide to use a olive of a stick to represent a martini glass which I think is more of a signifier that it is an alcoholic bar.
Entertainment
When creating my entertainment logo, I found this one to be quite difficult to represent the entertainment with the 'X'. From my thumbnails I decided to go with using a squiggly line contrasting against a straight line to reinforce excitement or something different from the ordinary. I used the same structure with my previous icons and used the zig zag tool in Illustrator to manipulate one of the lines. However when doing this the ends of the line would break up and create a strange texture. I decided to put two small boxes over the ends to smoothen the design out.
Showers and Toilets
For the showers and toilets icon I decide to use the theme of a shower heading squirting water and used a multitude of the stems from the x in different weights and length to represent this.
Medical
For the medical sign I did contemplate using an 'X' however in the context in which the medical sign would be in a festival and the importance of it incase of an emergency I decided to use the internationally recognised sign but still using the 'X's stem style for consistency in the design.
Trade
For the trade and shopping side of the festival layout, I decided to use a recognised trade symbol incorporated in the 'X' to reinforce the meaning. Again I used the same structure from the rest of my icons to create consistency.
Collection
After creating my designs I deiced to reflect on the collection I created to see if they were recognisable and legible. From looking at them I felt that the 'shower and toilets' icon could be refined and the stems were too long and thick.
Refinements
I went back to my design and experimented with the weight and spacing of the lines until I came up with the final design which I felt proved more affective, and when asked by my my peers the feedback was the same.
Beach
Also in the production of my icon refinements I had forgotten about the beach symbol. I then referred back to my design layout and created another icon to represent this section in the festival. I decided to use the theme of waves on a beach and created to curve lines to reinforce this about the 'X' which would act as the beach layout.
Final Collection
Overall I was really pleased with my way finding icons, finding this side of design as something of a challenge I feel that I really pushed myself and created some interesting and effective icons that fit in with the branding of my festival.
